If your hair is beginning to show the signs of aging – dull, lifeless color, or significant greying – it's time to head to the stylist. With fresh color, your hair will look vibrant again, and you'll look younger. Once you have your new color, you'll want to prevent premature fading. Here are four simple steps you can take to help your color last longer.

Don't Keep It Too Clean

If you're used to washing your hair every day, you'll want to cut back. Washing colored hair too often can lead to premature fading. Instead of washing your hair every day, start washing your hair every other day, or even every three days. It's also important that you avoid washing your hair for at least two days after you have your hair colored. That will allow the color to settle into the hair shafts.

Keep Things Cool

Enjoying a hot shower can be relaxing. Unfortunately, the hot water can damage your hair and cause the color to fade. Go ahead and take a hot shower, but switch to cool water when it's time to wash your hair.

Try a Bottled-Water Rinse

If you have hard water where you live, those additional minerals could wreak havoc on your hair and your new hair color. To protect your hair, try rinsing it with distilled water. Keep a bottle of water near your shower. Rinse the bulk of the shampoo and conditioner out of your hair using tap water. Finish it off by giving your hair a final rinse with your bottled water. Your hair will be soft, and your color will last longer.

Enjoy a Deep Conditioning

Once you have your hair colored, you'll need to keep it properly conditioned. In addition to the conditioner that you'll use each time you wash your hair, you should also give it a deep conditioning at least once a month. After you shampoo your hair, apply a generous amount of olive oil. Wrap your hair in a towel and allow the oil to soak in for about 30-minutes. Rinse the oil out using lukewarm water and follow with a cool water rinse. If you'd prefer, you can also use coconut oil for your deep conditioning.

You want your freshly-colored hair to look vibrant for as long as possible. Use the methods described here to keep your hair looking beautiful in between color applications.
